Bo’ness Potteries - Edinburgh the Modern Athens

Bo'ness Potteries Series

Edinburgh the Modern Athens

Another talk in the Bo’ness Potteries Series by Robert Jardine

This follows the previous well-received and interesting Bridgeness Potteries History Talk and takes us to Edinburgh for the inspiration for this range of tableware.

The Modern Athens series of pottery transfer prints produced by J. Jamieson & Co. was probably inspired by the book Modern Athens.

Scott Monument Plate The book, Modern Athens, showed original drawings of Edinburgh by Thomas H. Shepherd but Jamieson’s prints are NOT copies of Shepherd’s.

The book was first published in 1829 but Jamieson’s series is later, probably mid 1840s.

Tolbooth Kirk and Scott Monument both feature in Jamieson's series and they were not completed until 1844.

This illustrated talk will take place on Wednesday 25 March at 8.30pm!

All the talks have been very well attended and informative and helps give a little more insight and understanding of the importance of the Bo'ness Potteries not only to Bo'ness but a much wider area.
